The ancient Greeks had many Wonderful myths and legends,
and among those which they have handed down to us are the
stories of heroes like Hercules, Ulysses, and Perseus. They had
other stories also which told not of wisdom and bravery but of
people who behaved selfishly and foolishly and how they were
punished for their faults. Among these are the stories of King
Midas who was a legendary king of a country called Phrygia.
(Phrygia was in Asia Minor but nowadays it is called Lydia.)

Now, although he was very rich, he wanted to be still richer.
His mother, the Queen, told him that when he was a little baby
an army of ants entered the room where he lay sleeping. One
behind the other, they marched across his bed, and each one
placed a golden grain of corn beside him. The wise men said
that it was a sign of great wealth, and that someday the baby
prince would be the richest king in all the world.

King Midas often wondered about the prophecy. He was
neither very clever nor very wise, and sometimes he would
wander about in his beautiful gardens trying to think of a way
to become very, very rich.

At that time there was a race of strange creatures called
Satyrs. These Satyrs had the body and hind legs of a goat, but
the head, shoulders, and arms of a man. They had tiny horns
also, and sharp pointed ears and they were very shy creatures
who loved the woods and rivers.

Midas knew that the Satyrs possessed magical powers,
and he thought that if he could catch one of them he might
find out how to become very rich. He had seen a Satyr in his

"I love gold," replied Midas. "It is the most beautiful thing
there is. I wish that everything around me could be made of
